Specialists are losing the sofa market despite Sofology’s seat at the top

Sofology sit at the top of the UK sofa market with 12% of all organic clicks, but when you look across the whole market, generalists like IKEA come out ahead.

IKEA, Dunelm and Habitat aren’t sofa businesses, they sell everything, and together brands like these take 47.2% of all organic clicks for sofa searches, whilst specialists take 39.3%.

We pulled the full organic click share data behind the UK sofa market to find out what’s really happening.

The leaderboard – and why it’s closer than most

Sofology leads at 12.11%, with IKEA close behind at 9.67% and Sofa Club third at 7.25%. Furniture Village, DFS, SCS, Oak Furniture Land, Dunelm, Habitat and Home Detail round out the top ten, with the tenth brand still holding 2.13%.

Split by domain type, generalists take 47.2% of clicks against 39.3% for specialists. Everyone else, including social platforms, price comparison sites, and marketplaces, share what’s left.

IKEA wins the category most specialists can’t touch

Function and feature searches, including sofa beds, storage sofas, recliners, are led by IKEA at 15.2%, ahead of Sofology at 11.61% and DFS at 6.62%.

A brand that doesn’t specialise in sofas is winning a category that should reward specialism, but their range across sofa beds and storage gives them a relevancy advantage most specialists can’t match.

The categories where sofa specialists still win

Shape & Configuration is the largest category by volume and the most contested, driven by corner sofas. Sofology and Sofa Club are separated by a fraction of a point at the top, and below them the market is wide open.

Sizes & Seats tells a different story. Sofology leads, but Oak Furniture Land takes second, well above its overall market position and evidence that category-specific depth gets rewarded – even in unexpected places.

Style & Aesthetic rewards focus more than any other category. Sofology leads, but niche names like The Chesterfield Company appear here without featuring anywhere else in the category leaderboards.

The size of the opportunity

984 unique domains compete for visibility in UK sofa searches, and 61% of all clicks generated are expected to land on organic results.

Our data shows 7.3 million estimated clicks available every month, even after accounting for clicks absorbed by AI Overviews and other SERP features.

Product grids appear on 95% of sofa searches. AI Overviews sit at 7%, higher than similar markets, and are more likely to show up on style, material and advice searches than on purchase-ready commercial terms.

Where to focus

Specialists chasing a bigger share need to go deeper than generalists can, not wider. Style and Sizes both have room to grow below the main leaders, and a small gain in click share is worth competing for in a market this size.

How we built this

We built a custom tool to model the non-brand commercial organic click market, using Google’s keyword infrastructure, live search data, and industry benchmarks.

Competitive position is measured as Click Share, not rank. It’s weighted by organic visibility, realistic click-through potential, and the SERP features that absorb clicks before a shopper ever reaches a listing. That’s why a brand can rank well and still lose the click.

All figures represent a point-in-time snapshot, and we hold this data for all top 100 domains in this market, not just the names on this list.
